Stein Collection

Archaeological items, mainly manuscript material, excavated and acquired by Stein on his first three Central Asian Expeditions (1900-01, 1906-8, 1913-16) from sites in Chinese Central Asia, the Taklamakan, Lop and Gobi deserts.

Hoernle Collection

India Office Records

The India Office Records are the repository of the archives of the East India Company (1600-1858), the Board of Control or Board of Commissioners for the Affairs of India (1784-1858), the India Office (1858-1947), the Burma Office (1937-1948), and a number of related British agencies overseas. The focus of the India Office Records is in the territories now included in India, Pakistan, Burma and Bangladesh and their administration before 1947. The Records also include source materials for neighbouring or connected areas at different times, covering not only South Asia, but also Southeast Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East, and parts of Africa. 

The India Office Records are administered by The British Library as part of the Public Records of the United Kingdom, and are open for public consultation.

Photographs by Robert Byron (1905-41), formerly on loan to the Courtauld Institute. Transferred to the British Library in 20? in lieu of inheritance tax.

Raghu Vira Collection, British Library

Photographs taken at Dunhuang fby Raghu Vira (1902–1963) on his official visit to China in 1955 (he arrived in Dunhuang on 30 May). Given to the British Library in 2012 by his son, Lokesh Chandra.

Sherriff Collection, British Library

Batch of manuscript and one (forged) woodblock printed given to George Sherriff when he was stationed in Kashgar (1927-31) as Consul by Balruddin, a Khotanese man who had previously acquired manuscripts for Stein and Hoernle. He said they had come from Domoko. Similar collections mentioned the same individuals are in the Hedin Collection, Stockholm and the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts, St. Petersburg.

Fitzmaurice Collection

Nicholas Fitzmaurice (1887-1960) was Vice-Consul at Kasghar 1918-22 and Consul-General in 1922 and 1931-33. He acquired material from local collectors which he passed on to the British Museum.

Huntington

Ellsworth Huntington (1867-1947), American geographer and explorer. He made two expeditions to Central Asia in 1903-4 and 1905-6. During his second expedition, he incidentally acquired several manuscripts and wooden documents in Kharoshti, Tibetan, Sanskrit, and Khotanese, which he sent to experts such as F.W. Thomas for examination.
