Cat 235: Book of Buddha's Names

This and cat. no. 234 are copies of the Buddhanāmasūtra and one form of worship was to recite the names of the buddhas given in this sutra and make the small paintings. This sutra was listed as apocryphal in 730 and the Three Stages School to which it belonged was proscribed in 600 and 725. However the presence of these texts in Dunhuang shows that the sect continued to have its adherents.
