Cat 276: Embroidered banner fragment

This ninth or tenth-century fragment, is an example of Manichaean artists assimilating Buddhist themes. The woman standing on a lotus has an aureole embroidered with multicoloured rays signifying light. The object in her hand could be a flaming jewel, a lamp, an incense burner or a lotus, all Buddhist symbols. She has been identified as the Manichaean 'Virgin of Light releasing the Living Souls to Heaven.' The two females with her are recognizable as Manichaean priest or elects by their white gowns. This composition is very similar to those showing the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara leading Buddhist donors to Paradise (cat. nos. 178 & 296).
