Cat 287: Pastries

Among the food offerings in the tombs at Astana were well-preserved pastries, including a jam tart, and in a variety of shapes including buns, straws and twists, as shown here. They would have originally been placed on a shallow wooden or clay bowl (cat. nos. 285 & 286) near the head of the coffin. The world of the dead was exactly like the world of the living and the deceased was therefore provided with clothing, food, servants and money.
