Stein suffered from bad indigestion throughout his life and suffered badly when invited to formal dinners. On expeditions he was able to buy the staples for the team but needed extra provisions for the weeks and sometimes months spent excavating in the remote desert. Dried soups and vegetables seem to have been a favourite, along with Marmite, Cadbury's chocolate and cocoa for cold desert nights. This is an order of provisions for his second expedition dated 18 November, 1905. He ordered much of the food from England and so it had to be shipped first to India where Stein was based.
