Cat 99: Cavalryman

This is a model of a cavalryman from the tomb of the Chinese emperor’s eldest son Prince Yi De who died in 701. The Tibetan army would often have clashed with soldiers like these. They are described in a contemporary history: 'The first cavalry battalion of each army wears "bright-brilliant" armour joined with dark green cords: they have iron horse armour with dark green tassels and are distinguished by lion banners.' Other battalions wore different colours and had different animals on their banners.
