Cat 126: Avalokiteśvara dhāraṇī

In the tantric literature, Avalokiteśvara is invoked through the repetition of Sanskrit syllables or dhāraṇī or shorter syllable combinations known as mantras. Dhāraṇī printed on sheets of paper were considered to have magical properties of protection. This shows Avalokiteśvara at the centre of a printed dhāraṇī, written in both Chinese and Sanskrit.
