Cat 130: Ritual implement for empowerment

This ninth or tenth-century implement is made from reinforced paper attached to a wooden stick. The deity depicted is probably the important tantric deity Vajrasattva. In his right hand, held to his heart, he holds a vajra, a weapon which represents enlightenment. In his left hand, poised over his knee, he holds a bell. He wears a crown displaying the five buddhas of the maṇḍala. This implement may have been intended for use in an tantric empowerment ceremony. It bears some resemblance to Tibetan tsagli, illustrated cards used in empowerments.
