This Chinese manuscript is a series of reports submitted by two Buddhist monks, Guiwen and Dequan. They had received imperial permission to travel to India and were required to report on their progress. Their reports are dated to June and July 924.
Hundreds of Chinese Buddhist monks made this journey. By 924 the Chinese Tang dynasty (618–907) had collapsed and China was divided between northern and southern regimes. Guiwen speaks of arriving in Lingzhou, whereupon he purchased two camels in exchange for clothes. Their further fate is not recorded.
