Cat 84: Sale of a brother

This document is dated to the 22nd year of King Viśa Vāham (788) and, like cat. nos. 82 and 83, is probably also from Dandan-Uiliq in north Khotan. It concerns the payment of Viṃkausa's half brother as labour in lieu of a tax payment. A characteristic of paper contracts of this kind is the use of 'finger-seals' which are represented by short vertical strokes dividing the syllables of the person's name. 'This writ concerning tax-collectors will take effect when Viṃkausa and Mūpadatta put their fingers on it and the villagers all together put their fingers on it.'
